Archival materials may be used for research purposes only. Usage of material to support decisions about the person who is the subject of the materials or in a way that causes substantial damage or distress to them is prohibited. When visiting the physical repository, archival materials must remain in the archival reading area. Item duplication is to be done by archivists. Fees are applied to copies made. Digital photography is permitted by users. Due to the very fragile nature of some materials in this collection, some are available through photocopies, while still others must be used under the supervision of an archivist.

Biographical Note
Dr. Campbell was born Clarence Gordon Campbell on April 28, 1868 in Marshall Field, Indiana.
He married Helen Fahnestock and on January 28, 1897, the couple had one daughter, Helen Campbell (who would go on to marry Captain Clarence G. Michalis, 104th Field Artillery Division and have a son Clarence F. Michalis).

Dr. C. G. Campbell graduated from Wabash College with honors in 1883. He was a member of Indiana Gamma’s Phi Kappa Psi society. He earned his Ph.B. from Michigan in 1888 and his MD from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1890. Dr. C. G. Campbell served as an outpatient physician at Bellevue Hospital until 1898 and as a visiting physician at New York Hospital from 1897 until 1900 before opening his own practice.  He traveled in the Orient and Pacific Islands serving as a physician and studying racial traits.

Dr. C. G. Campbell served as the first president of the Eugenics Research Association from its 1928 incorporation. He was also the president of the American Eugenics Society in the late 1920s. He was a regular contributor to Eugenical News (the official publication of The Eugenics Research Association) and Eugenics (the official publication of American Eugenics Society). In 1925, he published Common Wealth: a study in social philosophy through The Century Co. He was a major proponent of the creation of a Eugenics Center at The Carnegie Institute of Washington in Cold Spring Harbor.

Dr. Campbell spoke at numerous congresses and conferences on the subject of eugenics and helped organize the International Congresses on Eugenics. He was a member of the Genetic Association, the Social Hygiene Society, Sociology Society, American Institute, Galton Society and the international Council on Eugenics. He was a fellow of the British Eugenics Society as well as a director and honorary president of the Eugenics Research Institute.

 Scope and Content
The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory houses the personal papers of Clarence Gordon Campbell. The collection ranges from 1921 to 1938.
The Collection is entirely comprised of Clarence G. Campbell’s Personal Papers. This record group is comprised of Correspondence, Manuscripts, Ephemera, Reprints, and Published Journals. His career as eugenicist, scientist and writer are well documented in this collection. Because, the collection is believed to be arranged in its original order, the record series arrangement has not been altered.

Arrangement Note
The Archive has not rearranged this collection as it believes the documents to be in original order. During the acquisition process, the donor stated that this collection has not been touched since C. G. Campbell’s death and that the files are all considered to be in original order.  As such, the order of the collection has not been altered during processing. The collection is arranged among 3 boxes and 11 folders. The folders and their contents seem to be arranged topically and semi-chronologically with some years overlapping between folders.

Correspondence Packet - Package of 5 Letters from C.B. S. Hodson
Letter 1 discusses the idea of a wedding card and includes a 5 page description of what it could look like and what eugenic information it would contain. Letter 2 lays out a scheme and administration plan for the "wedding card" as well as a sample. Letter 3 expresses frustration over the "Baby Contests" taking place across the country to create the best baby. Letter 4 requests that the Manager of the Press Association correct a false statement advocating illegitimate children as eugenic babies; included was an excerpt from C. G. Campbell's writing on the Inheritance of Moral Qualities. Letter 5 is from C. G. Campbell thanking Mrs. Hodson for her actions in Campbell's absence. He further indicates that her "wedding card" needs no improvements.
